Consumer Price Index (CPI Index) Inflation Chart
This chart shows the year-over-year change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in relation to the S&P 500. Shown are values for the "headline" CPI and the "core" CPI (excluding food and energy costs). CPI measures inflation at the consumer level, via prices in a "basket of goods". Inflation is a distortion in price measurements over time, and must be accounted for in stock market and economic studies, and stock timing. The latest CPI index is shown, along with the historical CPI index by year.
