About CrystalBull

Our Mission

We built this site in 2006 with one goal in mind: to try to model stock market momentum and trading psychology to find inflection points that others may miss. We quantify those inflection points. These models are rules-based, and do not involve any talking head's opinions, speculations, or "gut feelings." We let the math do the talking.

These models were built for our own use. We have opened them up to the public, but do not actively promote them or advertise, other than common search engine ads or outside links. The purpose of this site is not to make money from selling subscriptions, but to make money from finding a mathematical "edge" over the market.

About the Author

Ken Simpson — founder of CrystalBull.com
CrystalBull's stock market timing models are built under the direction of Ken Simpson. Mr. Simpson has been trading stocks and studying markets and psychology for more than 50 years. Simpson studied the stock market at Stanford University while earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Simpson uses these same models in his own trading decisions, and receives the same alerts as subscribers. Simpson is also the author of the book, "Do-Gooders," available on Amazon.

Simpson's favorite saying: "Every input counts!"
Methodology

CrystalBull publishes 6 proprietary stock market models:
  • The Vixen™: Our boldest model, trading the VIX Volatility Index. This model attempts to find the turning points in investor sentiment, as the market gyrates from Fear to Greed and back. The VIX has wild swings, so this model is only suited for a very small portion of one's portfolio, and then we recommend trading only options contracts, with limited risk.
  • The Matador™: This model was trained on the QQQ (NASDAQ-100 ETF). It also tries to find price inflection points based on momentum and trader psychology. It is a contrarian model, attempting to sell into strength and buy on weakness.
  • Trading Indicator™: Similar to the Matador, our Trading Indicator was trained on the S&P500 index, which, typically, is a bit more stable than the QQQ or VIX.
  • Macro Indicator: This indicator arose from our study of the correlation between the yield curve inversion and stock market prices. We added several more macro inputs until we found what we believe to be more reliable causation. The Macro Indicator trades the S&P500, but can be used for others as well.
  • Trend Indicator: Simply that. It models trend turning points, attempting to avoid long bear markets while participating in trending bull markets. This also trades the S&P500.
  • Calendar Indicator: This model studies seasonal trends that have held up rather well through history. It is a much more sophisticated version of the old "Sell in May and Go Away" doctrine, and was modeled on the S&P500.
  • Starting in Q2 of 2006, we started publishing our Growth Stocks to Watch list, screening for the most interesting growth stocks for those who want to find great individual companies to buy. This is something we have always shied away from, but we believe our screening process is sound. Of course, individual growth stock selection carries more risk, so do your own research and always use stop-losses.

Track Record & Transparency

We publish our Model Returns every trading day, right after the market close — an unusual level of transparency in the stock-market-timing industry.   Most sites either show a curated performance window, a marketing chart, or no track record at all.   CrystalBull publishes every signal, every day, for every model we run, with the raw daily data available as downloadable CSVs so you can audit the methodology yourself rather than take our word for the numbers.

Returns are hypothetical (backtested on each model's published rules over the periods shown).   Past performance is not indicative of future results.

Editorial Standards

We do not have interns, foreign writers, or AI writing our opinions. We only publish commentary when we have something to say that we feel is important. The media are full of noise, and we will not contribute to that.
